
What is the Escazu Agreement?
Adopted in Escazú, Costa Rica, on March 4, 2018, the Regional Agreement aims to ensure the full and effective implementation in Latin America and the Caribbean of the rights of access to environmental information, public participation in environmental decision-making processes and access to justice in environmental matters, as well as the creation and strengthening of capacities and cooperation, contributing to the protection of the right of every person, of present and future generations, to live in a healthy environment and to sustainable development.
The Regional Agreement is open to the 33 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. The signing period took place between September 27, 2018, and September 26, 2020, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. After reaching the requirements set forth in Article 22, the Escazú Agreement entered into force on April 22, 2021.
